Winning Antivirus Software - McAfee

McAfee Review

I use McAfee products on my personal home systems. McAfee has a long history of being at the forefront of internet security. They have shown they can develop their defenses to meet the new threats to our security that appear every year.

Protection against ransomware, which is an increasing security threat, comes with their malware and antivirus protection. As they are are a large company and part of the Intel family of computer companies they can give plenty of support, including real-time chat.

1st Place

PROS  +++++

  1. Award-winning anti-virus for your windows® PC
  2. Great pricing choices
  3. Protect computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones with the same subscription
  4. Macs are protected: Includes Anti-malware, adware removal tools, firewall, network manager, and web safety tool for Mac®
  5. Easy to install

CONS – –

  1. Full scan can take some hours on large drives, but a Quick Scan option is available
  2. You have to get used to alerts occurring in real-time

Recommendation

McAfee Internet Security is great for home use to protect multiple devices. Use quick scanning most of the time.

Family Antivirus Software

Bullguard Review

Bullguard fills the market spot for a lower cost yet still respectable antivirus solution. Independent testing has, at times, shown lower day zero threat detection but by 4 weeks out updates usually plugs almost all security holes. Protection against ransomware, which is an increasing security threat, is claimed for its most recent releases.

The base version has avoided many of the bells and whistles of higher end products which gives it a very straight forward user interface that will appeal to less sophisticated users. This may find it a place in some families.

PROS  +++

  1. Low price point for straight forward protection
  2. User interface simplified by focus on common tasks
  3. Internet security product has child and teen targeted access control

CONS – –

  1. Scores lower on day zero threat detection than category leaders
  2. Sophisticated users will miss some features in base offering

Recommendation

Recommend considering for family use as Bullguard products have family friendly controls and features for internet safety for children and teens.

Strong Antivirus Software

Avira Review

Avira is a German company that has been supplying computer security products since the 80’s. They keep their products competitive by actively updating to handle new threats. Recently, handling of ransomeware has been added to meet this growing threat.

Avira has a free version as an entry point. However, I personally recommend that paid versions are used due to the extra features included.

Avira scores highly in independent testing.

PROS  +++

  1. High scoring on antivirus testing
  2. Active scanning of USB drives when connected
  3. Remote management of multiple protected devices is possible

CONS –

  1. Package multi-device option covers fewer than some other vendors

Recommendation

Avira provides very strong antivirus checking. Home versions best for those covering a smaller number of devices.

Best for Included Backup Storage

Norton Review

I don’t use Norton products on my personal home systems. Although Norton has a long history in internet security I have had poor user experiences with their installation and uninstall user interfaces. They have shown they can develop their defenses to meet the new threats but their user experience has been slow to improve in my personal view.

Protection against ransomware, which is an increasing security threat, comes with their malware and antivirus protection. They have moved their offering to a security suite approach that adds extra complementary features to their previous antivirus focus.

PROS  +++++

  1. Norton Suite being in the middle price range makes it good value for the features it offers.
  2. Covers the full range of operating systems however some functions such as password management are limited on OSX.
  3. 100% virus removal guarantee however other companies are starting to adopt this approach so may be a short term advantage.
  4. Backup and restore features are offered which may be useful.
  5. Money back guarantee period is 60 days the which is the longest in its class.

CONS – – – –

  1. Limitations on OS X functionality compared to some other software
  2. Doesn’t seem to offer centralized security you protected review of protective devices
  3. Given the large size of current computer drives the limited online storage space allows only for backup of selected important files
  4. My personal experience of the usability places it below other companies

Recommendation

Norton Security can be used to protect multiple devices but you need to consider the limitations of the implementations on the various systems.

Although technically very competent, in my view, more user-friendly solutions are available.
