Antivirus Definition and Features

Let’s look at antivirus software and what it does.

Antivirus Definition

The definition of antivirus software programs travels something like this: A bit of software designed block out viruses and other malware from penetrating your system and endangering your data or the equipment itself.
A good antivirus is a must have. It decreases the times you have to enter your system to clean up the mess caused by a successful malware attack.

Before we go into finding our preferred antivirus, let’s see what exactly makes an antivirus, an antivirus.

How does an antivirus application work?

Aspects you should know about AV before getting one:

Virus scanner and script blocking

Reactive scanning is the bread and butter of an antivirus. It examines any new documents or folder before it is started and sees if it is known malware or if its behavior shows malicious intent.

Behind the scenes is where the work happens, and the monitored folder or program only opens once the antivirus has finished the scan.

Then there is the full plan scan, where the antivirus sees whats going on in here every crevice and cranny of your machine to find malware or any other suspicious software or files.

Some AVs block malicious ActiveX or Java writes from polluting your PC. Plugins based on these technologies can be used to add your PC as part of a botnet, inject code or do drive-by downloads.

What to look for:

Ideally, the scanner must be lightweight and not overload your device while still having the highest identification and blocking rate.

Database of known malware

However, scans cannot be efficient if the program does not know what it is looking to find. That is why every antivirus application comes with a database of known malware and compares each examined folder to the content of the database.

This database is informed from a central information source very frequently, quite often on a daily basis. These updates are one of the reasons why we always recommend for parties to keep their software updated, peculiarly their antivirus.

Updated software extends a long way to protect you on the internet since it severely lessens the possibility of malicious intruders manipulating an unpatched vulnerability in your software.

However, antivirus platforms likewise make use of something known as “heuristic analysis .” It will consider a document to be malware if it behaves like one, even if it is not in its database. For this reason, some AVs falsely group some secure platforms such as Chrome as a virus. The manufacturer calls this a “false positive, ” and it is a criterion used to evaluate an antivirus.

Automatic updates

The best antivirus software can be automatically updated. That is, it keeps its virus database and capabilities up to date. The quicker and most regularly up-to-date information means the better protected you are.

Malware removal

Getting rid of malware can be just as important as stymieing it in the first place. Typically, the cyber security industry characterizes the two roles as being detached. A lot of the free AV’s out there can only detect and block malware, but to remove it if your PC is infected can require a paid upgrade.

So you will most likely have to purchase the full antivirus answer or download a separate segment of software specializing in malware removal.

Extras you should look for

Ransomware protection: Some antiviruses come with ransomware care. You should also backup documents to protect in case of a ransomware attack. With protection, the ransomware will not be able to encrypt the blocked files.

File shredder: The standard “Delete”+” Clear Recycle Bin” won’t remove all traces of the documents from your system. It will remove it from sight. However, these files are available for recovery with a specialized program.

In regular workflows, these invisible records disappear only after being pushed out of their memory spots by brand-new ones. File shredders erase them entirely and leave no trace of them on your system.

Firewall: Some AV’s can filter and scan your internet traffic to spy incoming menaces before they reach your device.

Other aspects to look for: DNS Protection, Password Managers, System Optimization, Phishing protection, Antispam, Browser protection.

How to test antivirus to be sure it works

Sometimes you will run through an extended period where you do not encounter any online menaces. You will question that you even have an antivirus installed.

So how do you measure your antivirus to see if it is still active?

You have to create a” fraudulent virus” that provokes your AV’s action procedures.

What you need to do is to create an antivirus exam document (a text document). A simple notepad report will work.

To do this use a standardized EICAR code. An EICAR code is something recognized by all antivirus developers as a means of testing if their application is active.

Your antivirus should prompt immediately and initiate security and safety protocols to omit the “faked virus .”

If it does not flag the fake virus, then that means your software is inactive/ disabled.

Antivirus Software for 2017

Norton Review – Full Report

I don’t use Norton products on my personal home systems. Although Norton has a long history in internet security I have had poor user experiences with their installation and uninstall user interfaces. They have shown they can develop their defenses to meet the new threats but their user experience has been slow to improve in my personal view.

Protection against ransomware, which is an increasing security threat, comes with their malware and antivirus protection. They have moved their offering in 2017 to a security suite approach that adds extra complementary features to their previous antivirus focus.

Norton Features

Multi-Device options and User Support

Norton Security has three levels of subscription for non-business use, a single device subscription, a three device subscription and a five device subscription. Although not reviewed here, there are small business license packs for up to 20 devices with a pro rata charge beyond this.

Operating system Support is for the Windows operating system from XP onwards. However, on Windows 10 The Edge browser is not supported

For Mac OSX the current and two previous versions are supported. However, password management features and family and family Premier features are not supported on Macs.
On smartphones, the Android operating system 4.0.3 or later is supported but a Google play app must be installed.

iOS 8 or later are supported but note that Norton Family and Family Premier features are not supported on iOS systems.

Norton comes with 100% virus removal guarantee. Full support live 24/7 and help online or by telephone is included for all subscriptions.

Security Features

Norton antivirus has been replaced by Norton Security, an all-in-one security solution. This is a single solution that covers your computers, smart phones, and tablets with Norton’s comprehensive patented technology.

As well as the expected antivirus functions the Suite also

  • recognizes risks such as such as phishing sites and unsafe social media content.
  • has a password storage function
  • features to keep personal information private.
  • Online storage is included, with the amount of storage depending on the number of devices covered. This can be useful for online storage and backup of photos, music, and documents.
  • checking to ensure applications are up to date with the latest version which is important for making sure you have security patches that protect against the most recently recognized threats.
  • Performance evaluation and speed up is also offered.
  • Assistance with recovery of stolen devices is also a included.

PROS  +++++

  1. Norton Suite being in the middle price range makes it good value for the features it offers.
  2. Covers the full range of operating systems however some functions such as password management are limited on OSX.
  3. 100% virus removal guarantee however other companies are starting to adopt this approach so may be a short term advantage.
  4. Backup and restore features are offered which may be useful.
  5. Money back guarantee period is 60 days the which is the longest in its class.

CONS – – – –

  1. Limitations on OS X functionality compared to some other software
  2. Doesn’t seem to offer centralized security you protected review of protective devices
  3. Given the large size of current computer drives the limited online storage space allows only for backup of selected important files
  4. My personal experience of the usability places it below other companies

Trying Norton again

Some years ago I had some issues which led me to replace Norton with McAfee, which at that time had a more generous installation policy and more robust user interface.

I decided to try Norton again with their free trial. Trying to install on a standard Windows 10 PC got me stuck waiting on downloading to complete. There was a warning that did slide onto the screen that Norton had expired so Windows Defender was being activated. However, the Norton Downloader continued running without an explanation and required me to manually cancel it.

Norton installed on my Macbook but on uninstall put my Macbook into a black screen status. This required a restart to correct but a newbie user may have had difficulty sorting the problem, especially if they were under time pressure. On Googling, I could find no Norton or other sites addressing this issue.

Recommendation

Norton Security can be used to protect multiple devices but you need to consider the limitations of the implementations on the various systems.

Although technically very competent, in my view, more user-friendly solutions are available.

Why You Need Great Adware Removal and Antivirus Software

McAfee Reviews Security Points

Why you need virus and adware protection

Computer viruses and adware are a common part of life on the Internet. A computer virus is a program that spreads by placing itself in files or other areas of the computer and then making copies of itself. Some viruses don’t cause much of a problem, while others may damage files and some may even destroy files. In the past computer viruses were spread by sharing discs and other sorts of portable media. Today the most common way for viruses to spread is through email messages. However, in some cases plugging a USB storage stick into a computer and using it can transfer viruses.

Viruses are dangerous because they can basically do anything that a program can do on your computer. Some viruses set out to damage files while some viruses may be aimed at spreading to other computers rather than damaging the computer they are on.

Risky Emails

Email messages mostly spread viruses by having an attachment, such as a text document or an image, or by including a clickable link in the email message. Depending on how your email client operates, even opening a message may be enough to load a virus onto your computer. Often viruses are spread by email messages made to look interesting and inviting but coming from an unknown source. You shouldn’t open anything in such an email message unless you trust the sender of the message. Sometimes an email message can be made to look like it comes from someone you know but is actually from another source. For this reason, even if you know the sender you should be wary about opening an unexpected attachment.

Removing Problems with Antivirus Software

Adware removal and virus removal with antivirus software goes in two steps. Firstly, the malware is identified by known signatures or by incorrect behaviours found by monitoring. Secondly, this malware is either quarantined or automatically removed. Quarantining allows restoring the files in cases where the identification is either in error due to similarities in program signatures or where a low risk of problems is acceptable. Automatic removal is often the step used for dangerous malware.

Antivirus software not only has the ability to remove adware and viruses but also has a process for updating its information so that it becomes aware of newly released viruses and malware. This update function is very important because the criminals producing viruses work to bypass antivirus software by changing the virus code. Updating antivirus software means that new or changed virus code can be detected and stopped.
